Dartford Sharks ladies team first game....ever (well this time round anyway!)

After nearly a year of training and getting a team ready to play with each other against other ladies squads it is now the moment of truth.

Dartford ladies secured their first friendly game against Iroquois ladies.

With apologies from a few players (including some key to the core of the squad) the girls arrived at Gravesend a bit nervously it has to be said. With some never having played a proper game this was a new start for them.

The game started and Iroquois made an easy basket. I thought 'here we go' but the team said 'no' and pulled back with one basket, then another and before long we had quite a lead and were up by 6. Iroquois made some subs and changed the game dynamic pulling them back into the game and ending the quarter 10-8 in favour of Iroquois. A great first quarter from the team.

As in the first, the ladies came out in the second very strong and went on an 8 point streak. Continuing strong they took the second by 14 points to 7 leaving the half time score a very respectable 22-17 in favour of the sharks.

Looking at the score sheet, you can see that the third was exactly the same as the second. Dartford extended their lead with a number of baskets from T and Tunde even though they were getting bashed with no calls. End of the third score 33-25, a great score but we all know what can happen in the fourth.

Any basketball game can be won or lost in the 4th and being able to keeping a lead comes with a certain amount of experience. I'm not sure whether the team or us as coaches got slightly complacent but in the fourth the tables turned. We could not get a break and Iroquois came back to give a very exciting finish that just did not go Dartford's way.

A great first game from all the ladies that took part. We have lots to learn from this, and will be tackling these lessons head on in training over the coming weeks so that we are ready for our next friendly game that we manage to secure.

Many thanks to Iroquois for providing the venue, refs and table. An enjoyable night!

Final score : 44 - 41
