Dartford Sharks I Winners of Medway Cup Final!!

This Saturday saw a day of finals at Brompton Academy in Gillingham.  Ours was the third game of the day against Walderslade Wizards.  Every game we play against Wizards is guaranteed to be a pleasure to watch and a very close and physical game that can go either way and inevitably does.  In the league this year, Dartford have taken one game and Wizards took the other, so one game a piece and everything to play for.

As far as both teams being ready for the final, Dartford only managed to put out 7 players, due to others not being allowed to play as they had not played in the group stages, as well as having some injured players battling through and playing nearly a full game.  That said, a number of the Wizards players had played in the previous game for another team so the each side could have made their excuses but both put in stellar performances to make this final one to remember.

The game started and Wizards, being warm from the previous game, came out the stronger team taking a quick and early 12-2 lead.  This was soon pulled back to within one point through some great team play and 12 points from Eugene, leaving the end of the quarter at 20-19 in favour of Wizards.

In the second quarter Pavel for the Wizards used his height and ability to dominate the inside scoring 15 points which we could not match and leaving Dartford trailing by 10 going into the half.

But the third quarter was our quarter.  Our defense was solid and we held Wizards to only 9 points while scoring 19 ourselves and once again leaving ourselves one point down with one quarter to play.

The last quarter seemed to last forever and was very tense but by now Dartford were not about to give yet another final over to the Wizards.  We moved ahead early in the quarter and then slowed the game down in order to run the clock down.  Pinging the ball round on each offense did the job and we ended the game with a 5 point lead and our first bit of silverware for a few years now.

A superb team effort and a huge game for Eugene who got a massive 37 points. Big respect also to James and Zsolt who both played nearly a whole game while injury plagued.  Big thanks to all of the supporters who really helped us through the game.

Final Score : 66 - 71

Sharks Scorers : Braknys 37, Krafe 12, Andrzejwski 10, Demmon 4, Podjaski 3, Pullen 3, Long 2
