Double disappointment for Sharks II (but you can’t fault the effort!)

Thursday 19th March – Dartford Sharks II Vs Maidstone Warriors II – Plate semi final

In the first of two games against Maidstone II in the space of six days, tonight was our chance to emulate Sharks I and book a place in the Plate final. With a near full strength squad at our disposal and a decent home crowd along to support we were all up for the test. However we were also well aware of the challenge ahead as Maidstone had lost just 1 game all season and were already confirmed as winners of division 2.

The first quarter was too close to call and with 5 different players on the score sheet for both teams a 16-16 finish seemed more than fair. Both teams were in the team foul penalty zone in the 2nd in what was always going to be a physical cup-tie style battle. Round two went to the Sharks as we went into the half 38-32 up.

Buoyed up by our first half performance we started the 3rd as we left off  and while the scoring slowed down a little we were able to add to the lead, taking an 11pt advantage into the last stretch. Unfortunately this is where Maidstone started to show why they will be leapfrogging their first team into div 1 next season. By midway through the quarter Sharks had been caught and while Maidstone remained focused, we were finding it difficult to produce the form shown earlier in the game. A great effort but it was Maidstone who progressed to the final where they ran out winners against div 1 Sevenoaks.

Final Score: 65-72

Sharks Scorers: Marsh 20, Plail 13, Sabunas 10, Stopford 9, Yogev 6, Moradpour 4, Smee 3.

Wednesday 25th March – Maidstone Warriors II Vs Dartford Sharks II

Tonight’s fixture against Maidstone was the final league appearance for us this season, however knowing well the task ahead we really didn’t give ourselves the best chance to make a game of it. A mixture of injuries, late arrivals and absentees pretty much handed the game to Maidstone from the start.

With Mindy sidelined due to injury Coach Webb stepped in at the last minute to give us a different option. Although with none of us able to hit a barn door all night and more than a couple of air balls to boot it was a wonder Maidstone didn’t capitalise on this more. Losing the first half 36-17 it was difficult to find much to shout about in the second half albeit our defensive efforts improved and Todge posted a season high shooting bonanza!

Following last week’s close match up, tonight really was something of an anticlimax, which sees our league season end with the battle for second place being a tight run contest to be confirmed soon.

Final Score: 61-38

Sharks Scorers: Yogev 13, Stopford 7, Torreggiani 6, Webb 6, Plail 3, Moradpour 2, Marsh 1.
