Promising start to Rosebowl for Sharks II

Thursday 23rd April – Dartford Sharks II Vs Maidstone U18

With 13 teams taking part in this year’s Rosebowl competition, Sharks II have been drawn into Pool C for the group stages along with: Bromley I, Folkestone Vets, Maidstone II and Maidstone U18. All Rosebowl games start according to the difference in handicaps which are based on the final league standings.

Having already played against the U18s three times this season and seeing them improve in each game tonight would be no formality as we looked to overcome a 25 point deficit. Indeed in our last match up Maidstone pushed us closely throughout the game and could’ve taken the win right up until the final few minutes.

In an effort to stop their 3 point threat we set up in a 3-2 zone from the start, and while we were having success in the back court we also started to find space beyond the arc in the front court. Five 3 pointers in the 1st helped us to claw back 16 points by the end of the period and be 24-33 down going into the second. Keeping the pressure on defensively our scoring efforts continued in the 2nd but now we were also finding the space closer to the basket.

A great team effort saw us eliminate the deficit by the midway point and begin the 3rd 46-44 ahead. The job was far from done however as we began to tire we needed to maintain the momentum if we were to make the game safe. Maidstone upped the pressure defensively in the second half which saw us visit the foul line more often and extend the lead.

At 68-56 going into the 4th the game looked to be getting away from the U18 team but they didn’t let it faze them as they posted their best quarter against us to end the game 83-70. Our game plan had paid off as we outnumbered them from 3 point range by 9 buckets to 0.

Many thanks to Maidstone for agreeing to rearrange the game, to Tim for stepping in to ref at the last minute and to Ben for coaching.

Final Score: 83-70

Sharks Scorers: Marsh 20, Sabunas 16, Stopford 16, Rowlett 12, Yogev 10, Moradpour 7, Whitaker 2.

Next up: Bromley I away on 28th April
