Dartford sharks extend lead at the head of Medway League I

The Dartford Sharks were looking to continue their current winning streak versus a Sevenoaks team that has provided a stern challenge over the last few years. Sharks knew that this was a game that they must win if they wanted to win the league title this year. The Sharks started the game a little flat and found it difficult to get going but were able to level the score heading into the second quarter.

Sevenoaks appeared to be missing a few players and as a result Dartford knew that they had to pick up the tempo and use our deep bench to our advantage. In the second quarter our bench provided quality minutes and ended the half with a strong effort that saw Dartford up by 5 points.

The starters were put back in to start the second half and knew that they had to match the effort put forth by our bench. Simply put the starters matched the effort by going on a 9 – 0 run and continued to build the lead to 20 points midway through the 3rd quarter.

Sevenoaks called a timeout and realised that if they did not change something then the game would be out of reach before they knew it. A defensive change by Sevenoaks stifled the Sharks and Sevenoaks began to chip away at the lead.

It seemed like an eternity before the Sharks were able to score again and Sevenoaks had cut the deficit to 3 points. Realising that this was a game that we could not afford to lose we picked up our intensity and started to play as a team to find open looks and thankfully started to knock down those open shots.

Overall a good grind out win but not our best performance. Credit to Sevenoakes on fighting to the finish and on another night this game may have been in there favour.

Final score : 73 – 62

Sharks scorers : Brankys 23, Schreiber 16, Maher 14, Kraft 10, Fraser 3, Long 3, Demmon 2, Pullen 2

Sharks travel to Eltham next week to continue their defence of the Medway Cup.
