Dartford Ladies Vs Maidstone

After a number of rearranged dates, we finally settled on a date for the home leg of the friendly Dartford vs Maidstone ladies rematch at the Shark Tank. As it was the school holidays, numbers were short for both teams, however Dartford felt it the most having only 5 players and no substitutes.

Maidstone looked like they were a lot more organised this time around and there were some nerves in the Dartford camp before the start of the game.  After finding a whistle for Ian to ref, the game commenced and Dartford started in fine fashion.

A last minute change to the defense saw dartford go into a 2-1-2 zone defense which caused Maidstone to struggle while penetrating the basket but also let our girls conserve their energy.  Some quick, early baskets from Cat, finding space in the corners behind the Maidstone defense for easy layups, followed by numerous hard drives to the basket from Tunde and Steph, allowed Dartford to take an early lead in the game putting them up by 6.

The second quarter was much the same with the scoring dominated again by Steph and Tunde but there was not as much movement on offense and during the half time break tactics were changed and the girls got themselves a well deserved break.  To get the ball moving, it was decided that Steph would move to the 2 position, leaving the careful hands of Marie bringing the ball up.  Tunde and Cat would remain making their driving cuts and we would try and find newcomer Leonie's position.  Not a natural post player, she found it difficult this game but with her height, over the next few training sessions we will work on her inside game so that she can add to the score board as well as pulling down monsterous rebounds on both ends of the court.

The third looked a lot better than the second, the ball was moving around, all the girls were happy as everyone was getting a chance to showcase their skills and this lead to a number of outside 3 point baskets from Steph.  This along with the constant pestering drives from Tunde and Cat kept Dartford moving forward but much has to be said about the defensive abilities of Marie and Leonie stepping up and causing Maidstone to only manage 2 points in the quarter.

Going in to the 4th it looked like there was no way of Maidstone pulling back.  A few points on the board early in the quarter for Maidstone but the rest of the quarter was dominated by the (now very tired) Dartford girls.  The game completed with Dartford taking a huge and well deserved win by 36 points.

Despite the score, I believe both teams thoroughly enjoyed the game and already we are looking forward to more games in the future...

Final score : 54 - 18

Sharks scorers : Steph 22, Tunde 18, Cat 10, Marie 4
